10.9 COVID-19 Update

10.9 COVID-19 Update
Posted on 10/09/2020

On October 8th, the Estacada School District was notified by Clackamas County Public Health that there has been an exposure of COVID-19 at River Mill Elementary School. That day, the individual with the confirmd case of COVID-19 was contacted and is at home self-isolating and monitoring for symptoms. Every person who came in close contact with the individual has been notified and has been asked to begin self-isolation and symptom monitoring as of October 8th. This individual was an adult, and no students were identified as close contacts. In order to protect the privacy of the individual, this will be the only information released by the district about this individual.

For members of the school and greater community, we understand that this will cause concern. We are working closely with Clackamas County Public Health to take additional steps to protect the health of our community. Based on the recommendations from the County Public Health Department, the following initial measures and extra precautions are being put in place:

  • Limited in-person instruction for grades Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth Grade will be canceled starting Monday, October 12th. All elementary students will transition back to Comprehensive Distance Learning. Secondary level limited in-person student instruction will continue as scheduled at this time.

  • Additional cleaning and thorough disinfecting of the entire impacted buildings will take place.

  • Impacted individuals that the health department determines to be a close contact (within 6 feet of the person with COVID-19 for more than 15 minutes) of the positive case have been contacted.

    • Individuals who are determined to be in close contact with the exposed individuals have all been contacted by the Clackamas County Health Department or the Estacada School District and will need to quarantine for two weeks.

We will continue to communicate with families and the community regarding the details of school closures. River Mill Elementary and Clackamas River Elementary buildings will be closed until further notice for cleaning. Clackamas River Elementary has been closed in an abundance of caution and in alignment with public health recommendations due to the traffic between River Mill and Clackamas River.  We apologize for the inconvenience of this closure, and we thank the community for continuing to do their part to protect themselves and others.

Student and staff safety will always be a priority in the Estacada School District. All building closure decisions are made in collaboration with local public health and the Oregon Department of Education. All decisions made are in alignment with the rigorous metrics established by the State of Oregon. We look forward to welcoming students back as soon as metrics and safety measures allow. Providing a high-quality educational experience for all students is a goal that our district continues to maintain regardless of the circumstances.

The best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is through wearing a face covering, practicing physical distancing, and practicing good health hygiene habits. Be sure to wash your hands frequently with soap and water, cover your coughs and sneezes, and avoid contact with people who have signs of illness. Stay home if you are feeling ill or have COVID-19 symptoms.
