On Thursday December 9th, the Estacada School District Executive Board of Directors unanimously approved a resolution to purchase and install an artificial turf athletic field at Buzz Randall Stadium. This decision comes following a season of athletic success for Estacada’s student-athletes, hindered by unsafe grass field conditions that prompted the cancellation and relocation of many games and events.

This project is drafted with a not-to-exceed $2 million contingency. The substantial investment for Estacada’s children will come from the district’s Capital Improvements Fund. This fund of $2.5 million is reserved only for needed updates to the district’s facilities. A major source of revenue for this account is the Construction Excise Tax that the district receives when new building permits are authorized in the Estacada school district boundary area.

District leaders have met with a variety of community members to investigate the feasibility of receiving in-kind donation and community support, work, and equipment to help reduce the costs of the turf field installation. Plans and efforts have been made to ensure that work and funds can be kept local to the maximum extent possible.

Student athletes, coaches, and district staff are encouraged by this decision. The grass field has long posed a major safety concern for children, with the slippery surface prompting athletic officials to cancel, relocate, and call many games. The current field required a substantial annual investment of time, labor, water, and money, and despite this still has limited usability. A turf field would improve efficiency and increase the annual field usability by almost 20,000 hours- opening up exciting opportunities for children of all ages in our community.

Superintendent Ryan Carpenter noted after the December board decision that he is “Proud of the hard decisions made by the school board. This is a long term investment that will support a best-in-class educational experience for Estacada’s kids and community.”
